Example 1: SAC Medelser hut, Lukmanier pass
At an altitude of over 2,500 m, on top of a pass, fully exposed to the untamed winds. That’s the Swiss Alpine Club’s Medelser hut on Lukmanier pass.
“The wind suddenly changed direction and blew down the chimney, forcing the thick black smoke back into the kitchen. We couldn’t let any air in because the windows were blocked by snow. And we only had 1 1/2 hours before the evening meal was due to be served.”
This is how the hut warden M. Zielle explained the problem with draughts during föhn storms.
The old chimney cowl was replaced by a BASTEN Regulator as a test.
“I was amazed that the problem could be solved by simply replacing the chimney cowl. Now it doesn’t matter how wild the storm is outside, our wood-fired stove can still be lit and the chimney draws well and with no problems. The only thing we haven’t got rid of is the föhn.”

Example 2: Rose Prairie, British Columbia, Canada
“The fire in our wood-fired stove never goes out between October and May here in the north-east of British Columbia. Temperatures outside can fall to –48°C and the winds can be up to 90 km/h. Our chimney just didn’t draw well enough and we couldn’t find a solution to the problem anywhere in Northern America. We came across Basten on the Internet.
The technical data sounded convincing, so we contacted Basten and the service was excellent. They even adjusted the dimensions of the chimney cowl to our Canadian chimney.
Since fitting the Basten Regulator, the fire in our stove has been burning smoother and more efficiently. The draught in the chimney is much better and we’ve had no more smoke being forced down the chimney by strong gusts of wind.
We can highly recommend the Basten Regulator for anyone who wants to improve their chimney or stove. For us, this product is the Swiss watch for the world of chimneys!”
